I do not think that more government is the answer. A better job can be done with a tighter more focused approach. However, I suspect that we will be seeing a new federal police force in the near future.
I'm curious: can you clarify what you mean when you say "Bill C-5 REMOVED these minimum sentences"? Are you saying that there are no more minimum sentences for all of these crimes?
That portion of the article is directly from the government of Canada’s notice. You can read in full detail here if you wish. Short answer, that is the list of repealed sentences verbatim.
Ah, right. I remember this now. There is a reason for eliminating minimum sentences, and that is to allow judges the freedom to decide, which I fully support. Government controlling the courts in any but a most minimal way is something I could never support. Note that minimum sentences were not removed for the most heinous of crimes. I support the logic stated on that web page: "Repealing MMPs would provide sentencing judges with the flexibility to impose an appropriate sentence, including terms of imprisonment that are lower or higher than the MMPs that would be repealed."
I agree with you 100%, the less government control the better. This does not make sense and should not be a federal decision.
It is very odd that there is no minimum penalty for having an illegal firearm and fentanyl with intent to sell. With OD death rates the way they are you would think a crack down on dealers would be important. Selling fentanyl is certainly a heinous crime along with extortion with a firearm and threatening life with a firearm, there is a lot in that list. Very serious crimes you should not have the opportunity to walk away from. You cannot correct rampant drug trafficking by lessening the charges for drug trafficking. The only justification given for Bill C-5 was too many minorities were being charged.
CANADA needs ELECTED ORGANIZATIONS that will Manage those who want to Manage us.
